Cofounder of Draftss
Who Are You?
My name is Junaid Ansari and I am from Mumbai, India. I along with my co-founder Amin Memon, launched Draftss.com back in 2018. Draftss is a productized graphic design & frontend code service on subscription.
With Draftss you can get all kinds of design services like branding, logo, illustrations, landing pages, app UX/UI, t-shirts, packaging, ads, pitch decks, social media graphics & just about everything else within graphics. Along with designing we also provide frontend code in HTML/CSS or on WordPress using builders like Elementor, Divi, Beaver, Oxygen, WPBakery, Visual Composer, and standalone page builders like Webflow, Unbounce, etc.
What’s the Story of Your Business?
We have been running a design agency for the past 10 years. We gained inspiration from some of our competitors in this domain and came up with an idea with an even better process that is more optimal and efficient bringing out better results at a more affordable cost comparatively.
We wanted to productize the design and code service domain, where a design team is like a product subscription. You buy a Design or Code subscription and equip yourself with a design and/or development team who can get everything done for you. Subscribe when you require design or code tasks to be completed, unsubscribe once you are done.
We quickly setup a minimal landing page to validate this idea. We used a decent portfolio from our past works and pushed the prototype website live within a week. We first published a Show IH post on IndieHackers and hurray! We received our first 4 customers. Later, we got hunted on ProductHunt which led to a further validation of such a service and voila! In a span of 3-5 days we were able to convert 11 customers. By the end of the first month we made around 3.3k MRR.
What Has Been Your Biggest Struggle?
Despite the fact that the product value per customer is pretty great, but that also becomes an equally greater challenge when the customer churns. Each customer comes with a set of design requirements in their mind that they would like to get done.
Founders being most of the users for our services visit Draftss for their new MVP idea or an existing startup for which they would require a new logo design, website design, a few marketing materials for social media & ad graphics. They have a certain design or code that they would like to get done. We create a few design concepts and share them with the customer. They review the designs, provide feedback & select one of them and mark the project as completed. Once the design is marked completed the files are handed over and the task is completed.
There are always a limited number of tasks that a customer comes up with and once their requirements are completed, they churn. We are still trying to find ways to keep this customer onboard and reduce the churn by as long as possible.
What Has Been Your Greatest Achievement?
Process Automation. The biggest and the most challenging feat to achieve in this line of business. Designs being subjective to the person viewing can be good for one customer and bad to another.
It requires constant monitoring of understanding the requirements correctly every time, getting the designs right every time in the shortest time possible and simultaneously automating the complete process with minimal friction. After having to run Draftss.com for almost 2 years, we have finally arrived at a stage where everything within the company is fully-automated and founders take care of a handful of tasks like hiring, network marketing, etc. which we will be automating soon.
Where Do You See Yourself and Your Business in 5 Years
In 5 years, I am looking forward to a bunch of companies working under one roof. One large diversified portfolio of startups serving in different niche fetching 6 figures each. With Draftss.com, we are constantly upgrading our arsenal of services that we cover, and automating it.
Currently, all of this is happening while we are operating out of just one timezone and covering limited categories of services. We will be expanding to other countries namely the Philippines and Indonesia in 2021.
What Do You Wish You’d Known Before You Started?
Building a great email list should be on any founder’s checklist. Whether it is your first startup or your ‘N’th, a great email list ensures that you have an audience to provide you with feedback & early adopters to mould your product.
All founders are skeptical of keeping their overheads low. That’s a good idea, but on the contrary if you are starting you would have to take care of lots of roles and time would be the most crucial resource. At such instances you should invest in using tools to speed up and save you time which will result in bringing in efficiency.
Finally, Tell Us Something Interesting About Yourself?
I need a variety of things to keep me occupied all day. I just can’t work on clockwork on monotonous things. I love to work on new ideas all the time. Brainstorm ideas, evaluate feasibility, then work on building it and see people utilize it.
While Draftss.com is operational, we are working on several other projects like:
Prospectss.com – All-in-one toolkit for emails, leads, data and outreach.
Artworkss.com – Automated banner ads, blog posts, & social media posts generator.
Codingss.com – WordPress, Shopify, HTML5, Webflow & Page builders development on demand.
