Sean Kim, CEO of Rype
Who are you?
My name is Sean Kim, I’m the CEO of Rype. We’re one of the leading language memberships online offering 1-on-1 language lessons with handpicked professional teachers.
Can you tell us the story of your business from idea to where you are now?
I had the idea for the business while I was living in Medellin, Colombia as I struggled to learn how to speak Spanish (even while living in a Spanish-speaking country). Nothing out there offered a quality, convenient, and affordable way to learn one-on-one with professional teachers, and the idea of Rype was born.
What has been your biggest failure or struggle?
As cliche as it sounds, I don’t really believe in failures as we leveraged the lesson we learn from the ‘failure’ to have greater success. As long as the failure doesn’t put you out of the game. But we have struggles on a day-to-day basis, whether it’s trying to grow faster or the site breaking without us expecting it to.
And what has been your biggest achievement or success?
For Rype: Honestly, the moments where I feel the greatest joy is not more revenue or more customers, but when I hear amazing stories about our student’s success. We just heard recently about a student connecting with their long-time teacher in Colombia after connecting on Rype. It’s amazing how we can connect people from around the world that would have never had a relationship before.
What’s your must read business book?

Who’s your most inspirational CEO or founder?
And can you tell us something weird or interesting about yourself?
Where do I start… I was born with a missing right rib, I’ve had grey hairs growing since I was ten years old, I’ve travelled around the world for the past 3 years while building my business.
