Alexandre Tomic, CEO of ALEA
Who are you?
My name is Alexandre Tomic, I’m from Paris and I’m the co-founder and CEO of ALEA.com. We run an online casino called SlotsMillion.com, and in 2015 we created SlotsMillion VR, the world’s first real money virtual reality casino.
Can you tell us the story of your business from idea to where you are now?
Twelve years ago, ALEA.com’s other co-founder Charles Gross and I had an affiliate website called Casino Lemonade, which offered a collection of games from many different software providers. It may seem obvious and common now to find a wide selection of softwares on one website, but eleven years ago back in 2006, it was the first of its kind.
Our philosophy was to create a place, especially an affiliate website, where players could access all games as free games from all software providers. From there we started thinking about becoming an operator and having a platform of our own, and SlotsMillion was born. When ALEA.com was set up five years ago, SlotsMillion developed from there.
We now have over 1,500 desktop and 800 mobile games, including slots and casino games both; a unique filter; cool features like Slots Tournaments and methods of protecting players; and more. We really want to provide the best possible experience for our players, so we’re very much focused on innovation and expansion at the moment; always looking to develop our casino further, create new features for our players, and become licensed in new markets.
What has been your biggest failure or struggle?
As I mentioned, before becoming an operator, we had an affiliation business. Unfortunately, when we started developing our own platform, our focus obviously shifted to that, and we stopped concentrating so much on affiliation. As a result of that, our affiliate business suffered. It still exists, but it’s not as big as it used to be.
And what has been your biggest achievement or success?
We’re incredibly proud of the fact that we were able to build our own platform and become a successful operator on the international markets, without having to buy or rent a third party provider platform, and that we were able to integrate more than thirty different game providers. As I said, our vision for Casino Lemonade was to build a website where people could play games from all possible game providers as an affiliate, and we were one of the first to achieve that.
What’s your must read business book?
I recently read Malcolm Gladwell’s The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference, which is based around the sociological changes of everyday life. I also liked Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion, a book by Cialdini about why people say ‘yes’. However, in general I like to read more about personal development and science rather than business.
